Embark on a fascinating three-day excursion through the heart of the Oriental Andes on our Ausangate 7 Lagoons + Rainbow Mountain Trek. This trek is unique, primarily because you won’t visit any archaeological sites or Machu Picchu.

The adventure starts in Cusco and takes you to Pacchanta, which is located 4,400 metres above sea level. From there, you will hike to the seven lagoons and then see the majestic Ausangate mountain, which stands at 6,333 metres above sea level and is revered as an Apu (sacred mountain) by the local communities.

3 Days 7 Lagoons – Ausangate + Rianbow Mountain Trek at Glance. 

DAY 1: Cusco – Pacchanta – Seven Lagoons – Upis.

Pick up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m. and drive three hours to Pacchanta. Enjoy a traditional breakfast before hiking for two hours to the stunning Seven Lagoons of Ausangate. After lunch by Azul Cocha Lake, continue for 3.5 hours to the Upis campsite. Optional visit to Upis Lake and relax in the natural hot springs before dinner under the stars.

DAY 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Puca Cocha Pass – Ananta Pata.

After breakfast at sunrise, hike toward Arapa Pass (4,989 m), then descend to Puca Cocha Pass (4,915 m), enjoying breathtaking views of Ausangate and turquoise lakes. Finish the day at Ananta campsite for rest and a hearty dinner.

DAY 3: Ananta Pata – Rainbow Mountain – Cusco.

Begin at 3:00 a.m. for the trek to Rainbow Mountain, passing Ananta Pass and Circle Lake. Reach the summit to take in 360-degree views of the vibrant landscape. Optionally explore Red Valley before descending to Quesiuno. Return to Cusco around 3:00 p.m., carrying unforgettable memories.

Inclusions

  • Briefing before the trek: briefing the day before the excursion, around 7:00 p.m., led by the guide. Please provide the name of the hotel where you are staying in Cusco.
  • Collection from your hotel: we will pick you up between 04:30 to 05:00 am.
  • Transportation: Private Tourist bus transfer from your hotel in Cusco to Challacancha, “start of the excursion”, and return to Cusco after completing the hike. We will transfer you to your hotel in Cusco.
  • Professional English/Spanish speaking tour guide: Guides who speak Spanish, English, and Quechua will accompany you throughout the trek, sharing the history and culture of the region, and concluding at Rainbow Mountain
  • Accomodations: Enjoy 2 nights camping in tents with comfortable mattresses
  • Meals: Enjoy nutritious meals during the excursion (3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners). The food is balanced to keep you energized along the way, with a free vegetarian option upon request in advance.
  • Expert local chefs: We have experienced cooks trained in adventure and mountain cooking. We use new kitchen equipment and kitchenware, as well as a dining tent with portable chairs and tables.
  • Muleteers & horses to carry : An experienced team will transport all necessary gear and supplies on horses or mules, so you can enjoy the trek without having to carry heavy loads.
  • Duffel Bag: At the pre-trek briefing, you'll receive a duffel bag (max 5 kg). Our team will carry it on horses, and you'll be able to access it at each campsite. After the trek, please return it to our office or leave it at your hostel.

Excludes

  • Breakfast on the first morning and lunch on the last day.
  • Entrance Tickets: An entry ticket is required each day to access this natural attraction, which is managed by local communities. The fee is 85 Soles, paid directly to support the locals who maintain the area.
  • Drinking water: we dont provide water for refilling cannteen or bottles, but will provide cold/hot at each meal, but you can buy a long the way for cost between 5 to 12 soles per 2.5 litres or you can take a purification tablets for mountain water.
  • Trekking poles: if you dont have them, you can rent from us for the rental cost 10 dollars, the trekking poles are very useful on steep and rough ground. which improves your performance during the excursion.
  • Sleeping bag: If you don't have a sleeping bag, you can rent one from us. The sleeping bags we have are specially designed to keep you warm during the trek, where temperatures can be as low as -10°C. The rental cost is 40 soles (10 dollars) for the whole trip.

What to Bring

  • Original passport: you can't use a copy of your passport; you need to make sure your original passport is valid for at least six months to enter and leave Peru. Also, make sure your passport has two blank pages for the stamps when you come in and out.
  • Good-quality daypack: It's really important to find a good backpack that's comfortable, light and small, to fill in and carry all your belonging
  • Trekking poles:We really recommend them for the Ausangate Trek and they are very useful. You can rent them from us.
  • Warm hat and gloves:Temperatures can drop, especially in the early morning or on the summit, so these are essential to keep warm.
  • Rain Gear:A rain jacket and rain cover for your backpack will protect you and your belongings from sudden downpours.
  • Waterproof walking boots: Durable footwear with good ankle support and grip will help you to navigate the varied terrain.
  • Layered clothing: The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so you need to wear layers that you can add or remove as needed. This should include a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating layer and a waterproof outer layer.
  • Sun protection: The sun at high altitudes can be intense. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against UV rays.
  • Drinking water: Staying hydrated is essential, especially at high altitude. Carry at least 2 litres of water or a Camelbak hydration bladder.
  • Camera or smartphone: Capture the stunning scenery and vibrant colours of the mountain. Make sure your devices are fully charged.
  • Personal first Aid Kit:take altitude sickness medication, painkillers, blister plasters and any personal medication.
  • High-energy snacks: Energy bars, nuts, fruit or chocolate can help maintain your energy levels during the walk.
  • Reusable water bottle or thermos: To avoid littering and to keep your water or drinks at the desired temperature.

F.A.Q. ¿What should I pack in my backpack?

If you are going on the Inca Jungle Trek, the ideal to prepare your backpack in advance. We recommend that you bring a small backpack, and leave your bigger one at the hostel in Cusco. Make sure you only bring your necesary things you will need for 4 days of the trek

2.What to pack in your personal backpack

During the days on the trek, Remember, you will be carrying your backpack with you for the entire trek, so you should carry a light, comfortable and good quality backpack. 

here, we give you the list of items which you have to carry in your personal backpack. 

  • Hats and sunglasses: The sun is intense at high altitude and you should protect your eyes from the glare. Wear one that offers UV protection and is comfortable.
  • Rain gear: The trail can be wet especially in the rainy season. Have quality gear and clothing with materials such as Gore-tex that will keep your skin dry while you perspire during the hike.
  • Warm clothing: During the Inca Trail, where the temperature fluctuates during the day and night, it is mandatory to have good clothing equipment such as: fleeces, long-sleeved shirts, down jackets and a waterproof layer.
  • Sunscreen: Choose a good sunscreen (high factor) and apply it before starting the hike and regularly during the day if you are sweating.
  • Hand sanitizer: Carry a good hand sanitizer to disinfect hands before eating, drinking and after using the bathroom. We recommend carrying a small bottle of hand sanitizer throughout the day.
  • Headlamp: carrying a headlamp is especially useful for those who hike the Inca Trail because it keeps your hands free for other tasks. It is useful to choose a headlamp for brightness, weight and comfort.
  • Snacks: bring snacks that are rich in energy and easy to digest. This, because chocolate bars or cookies are not ideal, as they can be heavy for the stomach and leave you with an impression of sluggishness, so we recommend taking granola bars or a mixture of nuts which will give enough energy to perform the walk.
  • Extra money: take money preferably in soles for drinks, tips and souvenirs: during the excursion you will find facilities or bathrooms where you will have to pay for the use of some of them, especially the first day.

3.What to Pack in your duffel Bag

Peru Travel will provide you with a duffel bag to pack your belongings that you don’t need during the day, the Horses will carry the duffel bag, and please note that it must have a maximum weight of 7 Kg, including your sleeping bag and your air mattress (if you bring or rent one). The duffel bag will be provided to you one day before the trek at your hotels or our office.

  • Sleeping bag: if you don’t have one, you can rent it from us; also if you want to buy it it has to have the estimated weight of 2 kilos and remember to pack it in a plastic bag to keep it during the excursion, we recommend a -10°C sleeping bag.
  • Rain Gear: The trail can be wet especially in the rainy season. Have quality gear and clothing with materials such as Gore-tex that will keep your skin dry while you perspire during the hike
  • Warm jacket: The weather during the excursion fluctuates and can drop sharply during the day and night, so it is essential to bring layers of clothing for the sun and a waterproof outer layer in case of rain or snow
  • 4 to 5 T-shirts: Absorbent T-shirts that dry quickly are recommended. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester or nylon are the best choice, as they will hold sweat and dry quickly, avoid cotton shirts as they retain moisture and cause chafing and are difficult to dry
  • 2 to 3 trekking pants: there are a variety of types of trekking pants one of them is the cargo pants which have large pockets on the side of the legs and the convertible pants have legs that zipper at the knee, those are ideal especially in hot climates or changing conditions during the trail for women leggings or leggings work perfectly
  • 4 pairs of underwear: wearing a sports bra and compression shorts will be helpful and keep you comfortable to avoid chafing. If you are hiking in cold weather, wear thermal underwear that will keep you warm

Itinerary

DAY 1:Cusco- Pacchanta - 7 Lagoons - Upis .

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 a.m. and enjoy a three-hour drive to the village of Pacchanta, surrounded by majestic mountains and breathtaking scenery.

Once there, you’ll enjoy a traditional breakfast. Afterwards, embark on a two-hour trek to explore the Seven Lagoons of Ausangate. You’ll have plenty of time to take photos, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and hear fascinating stories and traditions about the Andean mountains from your guide.

After exploring the Seven Lagoons, you’ll walk downhill for 20 minutes to reach the lunch spot on the tranquil Azul Cocha Lake, where you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal prepared just for you.

In the afternoon, you’ll trek for three and a half hours to reach our campsite in Upis, a magical spot nestled in the mountains. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a 45-minute walk to visit Upis Lake, another hidden gem.

As the day winds down, you can soak in the natural hot springs of Upis, the perfect way to relax after a full day of hiking. While you enjoy the peaceful sunset, our cook will prepare your dinner, allowing you to rest under the starry Andean sky.

DAY 2:Upis - Arapa Pass - Pucacocha pass - Ananta Pata.

After a delicious breakfast, you’ll begin trekking through the peaceful majesty high mountains and under the glow of a breathtaking Andean sunrise. This region is home to an abundance of native flora and fauna. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of rare birds, wild vicunas, or even a condor soaring above.

After trekking for one hour and forty-five minutes, you’ll reach Arapa Pass, which sits at an elevation of 16,567 feet (4,989 meters).Once there, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the colorful mountains.
Then, you’ll gradually descend toward Puca Cocha Lake, with Ausangate’s snow-capped peak to your left.

Along the way, you’ll see llamas and alpacas grazing in their natural habitat, and your guide will share insights into the local people, landscape, plants, and wildlife.

Next, you’ll ascend to Puca Cocha Pass (4,915 m / 16,125 ft), where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of Ausangate Mountain and three turquoise lakes below. It’s the perfect spot to pause and enjoy the stunning beauty of the Andes.

From there, you’ll descend to the Ananta campsite, where you can rest, change clothes, or take a short nap, In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner served by our professional chef while taking in the tranquility of the mountains under a shining starry sky.

DAY 3:Ananta pata - Warmisaya pass - Rainbow Mountain - Cusco.

Wake up early at 3:00 a.m. to begin your trek to Rainbow Mountain, a breathtaking geological wonder known for its vibrant, natural colors created by unique mineral deposits.

After a light breakfast, you’ll start hiking uphill toward Ananta Pass (4,500 m / 15,090 ft). From here, you’ll get your first glimpse of Rainbow Mountain in the distance—an exciting preview, though there’s still a bit more to go.

From Ananta Pass, you’ll descend toward Circle Lake, then continue along a relatively flat path. As you approach the final climb, anticipation builds—soon you’ll reach the spectacular Rainbow Mountain. Once at the top, take your time to enjoy the 360-degree views of the surreal, colorful landscape that stretches out around you. Soak in the beauty and the energy of this unique place.

If you’re up for more adventure, you’ll have the option to visit the Red Valley. This lesser-known gem is just as stunning, with its dramatic red tones providing a striking contrast to the lush greens of the surrounding mountains—a true hidden treasure of the Andes.

From there, begin your descent to Quesiuno, a walk of about one hour. This final stretch is a peaceful moment to reflect on the natural wonders and cultural richness you’ve experienced throughout the trek.

At the end of the trail, the transport will be waiting to take you back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive around 3:00 p.m., filled with memories of one of the most spectacular treks in Peru.
