Although it may sound unusual, having some knowledge of the history of Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas greatly enhances your experience as you explore these spaces. This background adds meaning to the many adventures available throughout the Sacred Valley.
The trek known as Huchuy Qosqo meaning “Little Cusco” in Quechua is an excellent choice for those seeking a scenic yet manageable hike. It offers breathtaking views of mountains, small lakes, and original Inca trails. This trek is perfect for travelers with limited time or anyone looking for a gentler hiking route. Huchuy Qosqo allows you to connect deeply with the landscape and history of this remarkable region.
You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning and transported by bus to the town of Patabamba, located at 3,848 meters (12,624 feet) above sea level. This is the precise starting point of your Huchuy Qosqo trek. As you begin your walk, take in the stunning landscapes that surround you along the way.
Your journey will first lead you to the small town of Sihua, followed by a climb to Pukamarca Mountain, standing at 4,150 meters (13,615 feet). From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Urubamba mountain range, the Sacred Valley, and the remarkable sites of Huchuy Qosqo.
From the summit, you will descend approximately 2 kilometers (0.6 miles) over about 45 minutes to reach the community of Pukamarca, where a delicious lunch awaits you.
After lunch, you will continue along the original Inca trail toward Puma Punku, known as the “Door of the Puma.” This path, restored through the Qapacañan project, leads to the secluded and mysterious Inca site of Huchuy Qosqo.
This area is also home to the highest peak in the Sacred Valley, offering panoramic views of the entire valley, along with the majestic snow-capped mountains of Pitusiray and Sawasiray.
At Huchuy Qosqo, you will explore ancient Inca buildings, sacred temples, storage facilities, and agricultural terraces. These terraces were ingeniously designed not only for cultivation but also for water storage, supplying irrigation channels a testament to Inca engineering brilliance.
Following your guided visit, you will descend for approximately two to three hours to the town of Lamay, located at 2,800 meters above sea level along the Urubamba River. From there, you will board the bus for a comfortable return to your hotel in Cusco, concluding an unforgettable day in the Sacred Valley.
The tour starts early in the morning at 6:00 AM.
