The 4-day Lares Trek to Machu Picchu takes you off the beaten track, where you can meet and interact with members of traditional Andean communities and explore the Andes in solitude.

Experience the breathtaking Lares Valley to Machu Picchu Trek, a captivating 4-day tour that allows you to enjoy the perfect combination of natural beauty and cultural immersion in the Sacred Valley. You’ll travel on less-traveled trails and winding mountain roads, climbing high passes to take in panoramic views of the Peruvian Andes.

During the trek, you’ll see high Andean communities of Quechua speakers wearing traditional clothing and embellishing the mountains. You’ll spend the nights camping at traditional communities where you’ll learn about their local customs and traditions.

You’ll learn about the daily life of these people, their culture, and traditions. You’ll also visit a local school and conclude the excursion with a visit to Machu Picchu.

Immerse yourself in the daily life of Andean villagers and learn about their centuries-old farming practices, weaving techniques and folklore.

It’s a perfect hiking for those who want to get off the beaten tourist track and escape to a part of Peru that  hasn’t changed much in the past 500 years.

this excurision of lares offers a glimpse into the real life of Andean farmers, dressed in their traditional ponchos in the colours characteristic of their communities.

You’ll see thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas, and inside the houses, kitchens full of free-roaming guinea pigs.

The trek is relatively difficult, as there are two passes over 4,000 metres above sea level, so you’ll need to be well acclimatised to the altitude before attempting it. We recommend that you spend at least two or three days in Cusco on day trips or excursions.

  • Collection from your hotel: we will pick you up between 04:30 to 05:00 am.
  • Briefing before the trek: briefing the day before the excursion, around 7:00 p.m., led by the guide. Please provide the name of the hotel where you are staying in Cusco.
  • Machu Picchu Tickets: Obtain and secure the entrance fee to Machu Picchu.
  • Machu Picchu guided tour: you will get a comprehensive 2 hours and 30 minutes a guided tour led by one of our expert guides. Designed to enhance your understanding of this historic site, the tour adapts to your ticket's entry time and circuit. after the engaging tour, you will have 30 minutes free time to absorb Machu picchu's beauty before continuing you journey.
  • Transportation: Private Tourist Bus transfer from your hotel in Cusco to the Lares Trek, "start of the excursion" and return to Cusco at the end of the trek. We will take you back to your hotel in Cusco.
  • Train : Round trip Expedition train service to Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes.
  • Experienced and licensed Tour guide. Spanish, English and Quechua speaking guides will accompany you during the excursion, to immerse you in the history, culture and conclude 2 hours and 30 minutes guide tour in Machu picchu.
  • Expert local chefs: We have experienced cooks trained in adventure and mountain cooking. We use new kitchen equipment and kitchenware, as well as a dining tent with portable chairs and tables.
  • Accomodations: Spend 2 nights in spacious 4 people Tents for 2 people, and conclude with a warm stay in a cozy hostel in Aguas Calientes. Each place to sleep has comfortable mattresses to have a peaceful sleep. but dont forget to bring or rent a sleeping bag.
  • Meals: Enjoy nutritious meals during the excursion (3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners). The food is balanced to keep you energized along the way, with a free vegetarian option upon request in advance.
  • Duffel Bag: At briefing or meeting one day before the trekking, you will be given a duffle bag in which you can put up to 5 kilos of your belongings. Our team will carry these duffels on horses during the trek, and you can get them at the campsites. This means you can hike comfy with just your daypack. When your trek ends and you return to Cusco, you must return them to our office or leave at hostel.

Excludes

  • Breakfast on the first morning and lunch on the last day after Machu Picchu
  • Entrance fee to Humantay Lagoon: On the first day of the excursion, you will need to buy an entrance ticket to Humantay Lagoon. from the local government office in Mollepata. which costs 20 soles/ 6 dollars for foreigners and 10 soles/3 dollars for peruvians, it must be pay witht cash in soles once you arrive there.
  • Sleeping bag: If you don't have a sleeping bag, you can rent one from us. The sleeping bags we have are specially designed to keep you warm during the trek, where temperatures can be as low as -10°C. The rental cost is 40 soles (10 dollars) for the whole trip.
  • Trekking poles: if you dont have them, you can rent from us for the rental cost 10 dollars, the trekking poles are very useful on steep and rough ground. which improves your performance during the excursion.
  • Bus tickets up and down in Machu picchu: The buses going up and down are not included, so you can buy a ticket in Aguas Calientes or after Machu Picchu. It costs 12 dollars for each way, but you can also walk for 1 hour and 30 minutes from Aguas Calientes
  • Drinking water: we dont provide water for refilling cannteen or bottles, but will provide cold/hot at each meal, but you can buy a long the way for cost between 5 to 12 soles per 2.5 litres or you can take a purification tablets for mountain water.
  • Travel Insurance and things of a personal nature – laundry and telephone calls, personal taxis, souvenirs etc.
  • Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are optional treks within Machu Picchu Citadel which do not include a guide. The climb is usually done on your own after your tour of Machu Picchu Citadel. If you would like the extra hike to be guided, please request in advance. There is an extra cost for this extra guided tour., Tickets for Huayna Picchu or Machu picchu Mountain: cost them 60 dollars each one
  • Tips for our team: You can choose whether or not to tip. The people who work along the trek expect tips in the tourism industry, so our company paid them fairly for the work they did. We want to make it clear that tipping is optional, not mandatory.
  • Hot springs: the hot springs in lares town costs 10 Soles and hot springs in Aguas calientes town cost you 20 soles.
  • Extra food and Snacks: You can buy it in Cusco is much cheaper than the excursion. There are local shops where you can buy cookies, sodas and water.

Recommended to carry

  • Original passport: you can't use a copy of your passport; you need to make sure your original passport is valid for at least six months to enter and leave Peru. Also, make sure your passport has two blank pages for the stamps when you come in and out.
  • Student ID: This is only required if you have booked the Salkantay Trek as a student. You must have a student card issued by your university (up to the age of 25). It should contain the following details: university information, personal information, a student photo and a valid date no later than 31 December of the year of travel.
  • Good-quality daypack: It's really important to find a good backpack that's comfortable, light and small, to fill in and carry all your belonging
  • Botle water or Camel Bag: The bottle needs to hold 2 litres of water. It is important to choose a water bottle that can keep your water cold.
  • Trekking poles: We really recommend them for the Salkantay Trek and they are very useful. You can rent them from us.
  • Hiking water proof boots (with ankle protectors)
  • Sleeping bag: when you buy a sleeping bag find one that is big enough for you. and put it in a waterproof bag so it doesn't get wet on the hike. also we recommend sleeping bags that can keep you warm down to -10°C. You can also rent sleeping bags from us.
  • Head lamp: This equipment is essential for anyone taking the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. You can also bring a torch.
  • Emergency money: Please remember to bring extra money for any emergencies that might happen on the trip. is ideal to bring 300 soles/90 dollars and in cash
Pricing

The cost of the 4 day Lares Trek depends on the number of people in your group. You can join an existing group (ask us for available dates) or start a new group if there are no scheduled departures that match your preferred travel dates.

If you are creating a new group, the initial price will be based on the number of confirmed participants at the time of booking. The final price will be adjusted according to the total number of people in the group, so you can save money more as more people join.

A non-refundable deposit of US$ 200.00 plus a 6% fee (US$ 212.00 per person) is required. Please make deposits through by PayPal.
Note: The deposit for all our tours and treks of 2 days or more is US$200.00 (plus US$12 PayPal fee) per person.

The tour will not be confirmed without a completed booking form and deposit sent to Peru Travel. The deposit is US$ 200 per person and is non-refundable. We accept payments via PayPal, which charges a 6% fee, so the total per person is US$212 and should be sent to perutravelcompany@gmail.com. We will send you the invoice and confirmation of your booking via email once we receive your information and deposit.

F.A.Q. ¿What should I pack in my backpack?

If you are travelling to a trekking destination, you should prepare your backpack and duffel bag in advance, especially for the Salkantay Trek. We recommend that you bring one or two large backpacks, depending on the length of your holiday. Carry only what you need for the 5 days of the trek, this means that any extra items or belongings you don’t need can be left at your hotel in Cusco or in our backpack storage room in Cusco

What to Pack in your Personal Backpack

During the days on the trek, Remember, you will be carrying your backpack with you for the entire trek, so you should carry a light, comfortable and good quality backpack. due to regulation issued by the local government, your backpack should not exceed 25 litres in sixe and large bags are not allowed  to be carried inside Machu picchu, if you have one make sure that your largae backpack looks as small as possicle to carry inside Machu picchu.

here, we give you the list of items which you have to carry in your personal backpack. 

  • Hats and sunglasses: The sun is intense at high altitude and you should protect your eyes from the glare. Wear one that offers UV protection and is comfortable.
  • Rain gear: The trail can be wet especially in the rainy season. Have quality gear and clothing with materials such as Gore-tex that will keep your skin dry while you perspire during the hike.
  • Warm clothing: During the Inca Trail, where the temperature fluctuates during the day and night, it is mandatory to have good clothing equipment such as: fleeces, long-sleeved shirts, down jackets and a waterproof layer.
  • Sunscreen: Choose a good sunscreen (high factor) and apply it before starting the hike and regularly during the day if you are sweating.
  • Hand sanitizer: Carry a good hand sanitizer to disinfect hands before eating, drinking and after using the bathroom. We recommend carrying a small bottle of hand sanitizer throughout the day.
  • Headlamp: carrying a headlamp is especially useful for those who hike the Inca Trail because it keeps your hands free for other tasks. It is useful to choose a headlamp for brightness, weight and comfort.
  • Snacks: bring snacks that are rich in energy and easy to digest. This, because chocolate bars or cookies are not ideal, as they can be heavy for the stomach and leave you with an impression of sluggishness, so we recommend taking granola bars or a mixture of nuts which will give enough energy to perform the walk.
  • Extra money: take money preferably in soles for drinks, tips and souvenirs: during the excursion you will find facilities or bathrooms where you will have to pay for the use of some of them, especially the first day.

What to pack in your personal Duffel bag?

Peru Travel will provide you with a duffel bag to pack your belongings that you don’t need during the day, the porters will carry the duffel bag, and please note that it must have a maximum weight of 7 Kg, including your sleeping bag and your air mattress (if you bring or rent one). The duffel bag will be provided to you one day before the trek at your hotels or our office.

  • Sleeping bag: if you don’t have one, you can rent it from us; also if you want to buy it it has to have the estimated weight of 2 kilos and remember to pack it in a plastic bag to keep it during the excursion, we recommend a -10°C sleeping bag.
  • Rain Gear: The trail can be wet especially in the rainy season. Have quality gear and clothing with materials such as Gore-tex that will keep your skin dry while you perspire during the hike
  • Warm jacket: The weather during the excursion fluctuates and can drop sharply during the day and night, so it is essential to bring layers of clothing for the sun and a waterproof outer layer in case of rain or snow
  • 4 to 5 T-shirts: Absorbent T-shirts that dry quickly are recommended. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester or nylon are the best choice, as they will hold sweat and dry quickly, avoid cotton shirts as they retain moisture and cause chafing and are difficult to dry
  • 2 to 3 trekking pants: there are a variety of types of trekking pants one of them is the cargo pants which have large pockets on the side of the legs and the convertible pants have legs that zipper at the knee, those are ideal especially in hot climates or changing conditions during the trail for women leggings or leggings work perfectly
  • 4 pairs of underwear: wearing a sports bra and compression shorts will be helpful and keep you comfortable to avoid chafing. If you are hiking in cold weather, wear thermal underwear that will keep you warm
  • Snacks: bring snacks that are rich in energy and easy to digest. Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Lares Hot Springs- Huacahuasi

At 4:30 a.m., we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and take you by bus to the famous village of Lares, home to the hot springs.

Afterward, you’ll travel for an hour to the village of Calca in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you’ll visit the market and purchase local products.

You’ll then travel another two hours to the hot springs of Lares, arriving around 11:00 a.m. You’ll soak in therapeutic pools of varying temperatures that will benefit your bones, muscles and relieve stress while you enjoy stunning mountain views.

After relaxing in the hot springs, you’ll enjoy a hearty lunch at 13:00, then hike to your first camp at Hucahuasi, 3,600m/11,800ft above sea level.

On the way, you’ll appreciate the majesty of the Andes and the high Andean communities and their traditional way of life.

Around 5:00 PM, you’ll arrive at the village of Huacahuasi, where you’ll camp and enjoy a delicious dinner before resting under the Andean sky.

Day 2Huacahuasi – Patacancha

You’ll wake up with a warm cup of tea or coffee as the day begins to get light. It’s time to pack your belongings and get ready for the most challenging day of the trek.

After a delicious breakfast, you’ll start a three-hour uphill hike to the highest point of the journey: Ipsaycocha Pass, located at 4,500 meters (14,760 feet) above sea level. Along the way, you’ll hike through inter-Andean valleys and open landscapes filled with native plants, wildflowers, and herds of alpacas and llamas.

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Veronica mountain, standing at 5,750 meters (18,864 feet).

From there, you’ll begin your descent toward Ipsaycocha Lake, where you’ll spot Andean geese and other water birds in their natural habitat.

Next, you’ll enjoy a hearty lunch in the great outdoors, then continue hiking for about three hours until you reach the community of Patacancha, located at 3,700 meters (12,139 feet).

Patacancha is a well-known textile village where people still preserve their ancient Quechua traditions. This is where you’ll set up camp for the night, surrounded by culture, history, and unforgettable landscapes.

Day 3Patacancha – Pumamarka – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

After a delicious breakfast, you’ll begin your hike to a viewpoint with breathtaking views of the picturesque Andean landscapes, allowing you to visually enjoy the valley and local communities.

During the tour, you’ll appreciate the Andean landscapes and your guide will explain the characteristics of different types of plants and animals, such as llamas and alpacas.
Later, you’ll arrive at the community of Patacancha-Willoq, located at 4,666 m/15,308 ft above sea level in a fertile river valley protected by high mountains. It’s one of the best places to experience Andean traditions at first hand.

These Inca villages are considered the most important living museums in the world. There you’ll see extensive archaeological remains (Pumamarka) and a wide variety of flowers and bird species.

In the afternoon, you’ll arrive to the town of Ollantaytambo, a place steeped in history, tradition and culture, where a delicious lunch awaits you.

Afterward, you’ll take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. During the journey, you’ll enjoy the scenic beauty of the region, which will leave you speechless and offer you one last pleasure of the day.

At night you’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes, located at 2,000 m/6,565 ft above sea level and considered the gateway to Machu Picchu. You’ll check into your hotel and have dinner. With the promise of visiting the lost city the next day.

Day 4Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Enjoy your last day visiting the stone city of Machu Picchu. After a hearty breakfast, head to Machu Picchu, where you can choose to hike or take a bus.

Between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., you’ll enjoy a two-hour guided tour to discover the mysteries of this ancient Inca citadel. You’ll explore and understand its historical significance through its agricultural terraces, residential areas and religious sites.

Afterwards, if you’d like, you can hike up the mountains of Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu, for which you’ll need to book in advance. Enjoy breathtaking views of the citadel and surrounding valleys, and observe how the Inca citadel is divided into distinct agricultural, residential, and religious sectors.

In the afternoon, return to the town of Aguas Calientes to explore or have lunch before taking the train back to Cusco.

The train will take you from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, from where a bus will take you back to Cusco.
