Quelccaya Glacier Trek – At a Glance.
We’ll pick you from your hotel in Cusco at 3:00 a.m. and begin a scenic 5-hour drive through the breathtaking Andean highlands. Along the way, you’ll pass dramatic mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and wide-open valleys that give you a glimpse of life in the Andes. Your journey takes you to the remote village of Phinaya, a peaceful community surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
Once you arrive, you’ll enjoy a hearty traditional breakfast to fuel up for the day ahead and help you acclimatize to the high altitude. This is also a perfect moment to take in the fresh mountain air and soak in the serene surroundings.
After breakfast, you’ll continue by vehicle for about an hour to reach the foot of the Quelccaya Glacier, the largest tropical glacier in the world. From here, embark on a gentle 20–30 minute hike to a viewpoint offering incredible panoramic views.
You’ll be surrounded by turquoise lagoons, sparkling streams, grazing vicuñas, and the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. Take your time to explore, take photos, and truly immerse yourself in this extraordinary landscape.
After visiting the glacier, you’ll return to Phinaya for a delicious homemade lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients. This meal not only gives you a taste of authentic Andean cuisine but also supports the local community and honors Pachamama (Mother Earth).
On the journey back to Cusco, you’ll make a special stop at Sibinacocha Lagoon, one of the largest and most breathtaking high-altitude lakes in the Andes.
