You’ll take a 2-hour transfer by 4×4 truck to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. Alternatively, if you’ll travel by river, the journey takes over 6 hours ( only for information). From there, you’ll board a boat to the Tambopata Lodge. Depending on your arrival time, you will be welcomed with either breakfast or lunch upon arrival. In the afternoon, you’ll go on an introductory walk through the rainforest, where you’ll have the opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles and insects.

Day 2Amazon Lodge – Monkey islands.

You’ll wake up at 4:30 am and take a 1.5-hour boat ride to reach the world’s largest macaw clay lick, Chuncho. During the journey, you may encounter fascinating animals such as capybaras, tapirs and even the majestic jaguar, which some of our previous clients have been lucky enough to spot and photograph.

Once you arrive at the macaw clay lick, you’ll witness an awe-inspiring spectacle as hundreds of parrots and macaws gather to eat clay. This is a necessary part of their diet and helps them eliminate toxins.

You’ll then see three species of macaw, which are among the most colourful birds in the Americas. They come in shades of red, green, blue and yellow. On a good day, you may see hundreds of these magnificent creatures flying overhead, it’s an unforgettable experience! After breakfast, You’ll take a boat back to Puerto Maldonado before transferring to the port for an hour long ride to our lodge. You’ll be welcomed there with a refreshing fruit juice. After checking in and having lunch, you’ll visit ‘Monkey Island’, located across the Madre de Dios River from our lodge.

Here, you can observe various species of monkey, such as brown capuchins, squirrel monkeys and saddle-backed tamarins. In the evening, you’ll go in search of white caimans, which are usually found on the sandbanks of the Madre de Dios River. Make sure you bring a torch, as you may also spot some capybaras! After returning to the lodge, you can enjoy dinner before resting for the night.

Day 3Amazon Lodge – Sandoval Lake.

After breakfast, You’ll walk 3 km through the dense rainforest to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. There, You’ll board a rowing boat and observe a variety of bird species, such as shansho cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, buzzards and other birds of prey.

You may also see howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins and sloths. You may even encounter the endangered giant river otters, which can reach two metres in length and is rarely seen. After the boat ride, You’ll return to the lodge for a traditional lunch.

In the evening, you’ll have another opportunity to go for a walk and observe the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles and other nocturnal animals. Then, you will return to the lodge for dinner and a restful night.

Day 4Amazon lodge – Macaw Clay lick - Puerto Maldonado.

Morning jungle walk starts at 5:30 a.m. and takes you to our 30-metre-high canopy walkway, which allows you to appreciate nature from the highest possible viewpoint and offers panoramic views of the Madre de Dios River. From the walkway’s various platforms, you can observe different species of birds, including toucans, macaws, tanagers and orioles, which makes for a wonderful experience.
