Traveling by Train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes

If you want to reach Aguas Calientes quickly and comfortably, the Expedition and Vistadome trains are your best options. These scenic rides offer a smooth journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Peruvian Andes, combining comfort with unforgettable panoramic views.

Limited availability:

Realise this journey aboard one of the most popular trains in the country. whose capacity is limited; For this reason, the number of seats available for train travel is limited. As a result, there may be no seats available on the day you wish to travel. We therefore recommend that you book as far in advance as possible.

Once you’ve made your reservation, you’ll receive official tickets allowing you to board the trains within 72 hours.

Rainy Season:

Trains do not run regularly from January to April. If you wish to travel during these periods, you will have to take the trains from Ollantaytambo.

Pickup Info:

Pick up is between 4am and 6am from hotels in the historic centre of Cusco. If your accommodation is not in the centre, we’ll meet you in front of the Cathedral, in the Plaza de Armas. The pick up time will be confirmed in the days before the activity, as it depends on the availability of the trains.

Important Info:

If the activity is cancelled due to strikes or bad weather, we’ll give you an alternative date for the tour. If the tour cannot be rescheduled, please note that you will be refunded the full cost of the activity, but not the cost of the Machu Picchu ticket.

Modality:

When you book, you can choose the type of train you want to take to Machu Picchu. The train takes between three and four hours from Cusco.

Train Expeditions OR the voyager :

When you travel on the Expedition Train, you’ll arrive in Cusco with the satisfaction of having travelled one of the most spectacular railway routes in the world. Thanks to the large windows in the carriages, you’ll be able to admire landscapes that will leave you speechless.

  • The expedition train departs at 06:10 and returns at 14:55 pm.
  • The expedition train departs at 06:10 and returns at 15:23 p.m.
  • The expedition train departs at 06:10 and returns at 16:43 p.m.

Below are the timetables for the voyager (Inca rail ) trains

  • The Voyager train departs at 06:40 am and returns at 14:30 pm.
  • The Voyager train departs at 07:20 am and returns at 14:30 pm.
  • The Voyager train departs at 07:20 am and returns at 16:12 pm.
  • The Voyager train departs at 11:15 am and returns at 19:00 pm.

Extra Upgrades:

Train Vistadome:

If you choose the Vistadome train or 360 °, you’ll be travelling in an original and fun way. The carriages have panoramic windows on the walls and ceiling, making you feel part of the surrounding nature. While you enjoy the wonderful views, an audio guide will tell you interesting facts about the places you pass.

Along the way you can dance to the sounds of Peruvian music and enjoy shows and typical dances of the region. You’ll even see an exclusive collection of  baby alpaca clothing.

  • Train : Round-trip train tickets to and from Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu, are included. You can choose between standard and more comfortable options, with popular services such as PeruRail’s Expedition or Vistadome, and Inca Rail’s Voyager class.
  • Bus Up and Down Tickets to Machu Picchu: Enjoy a 30-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu, getting you ready for an unforgettable experience. After your visit, take the return 30-minute ride back to Aguas Calientes plenty of time to relax, reflect, and scroll through the incredible photos you just captured.

Excludes

  • Meals: For breakfast, it’s a good idea to bring some snacks like fruit or sandwiches to eat on the way. You can also grab coffee or snacks at the train station before you leave. After you visit Machu Picchu, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Aguas Calientes and find a spot to eat—there are lots of restaurants with options for every taste and budget.
  • Hot Springs: If you want to relax at the Aguas Calientes thermal baths, there is a small entrance fee of 20 soles per person, payable upon arrival.
  • Additional expenses: Personal costs like souvenirs, extra activities, or any other incidentals during the tour aren’t included in the package. It’s a good idea to budget some extra money based on your own preferences for these.
  • Tips: for guides, drivers, and staff are not included in the tour price. While not mandatory, While not required, tipping is a kind way to acknowledge the care and effort you receive throughout your experience.
  • Alcoholic Beverages: These must be purchased separately.

Recommended to carry

  • Original Passport: You must carry your original passport—copies aren’t accepted. Make sure it’s valid for at least six months and has at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps when traveling to and from Peru.
  • Student ID: Required only if you booked Machu Picchu tour as a student. Your student card must be issued by your university (for travelers up to 25 years old) and include university details, your personal info, a photo, and a valid date no later than December 31 of the travel year.
  • Tickets: Make sure you have all your tickets, like train and entrance tickets. Print them or download them to your phone for easy access.
  • Insect repellent: Use one with at least 15% DEET. Although there’s no reported malaria risk, it’s important to prevent bites and stay comfortable.
  • Tennis shoes: Tennis shoes or hiking boots that grip well are important when walking on uneven and steep lands.
  • Comfy clothing: Dress for cold and windy weather, and be sure to bring a waterproof and windproof jacket.
  • Good daypack: Choose a comfortable, lightweight, and compact backpack to carry all your belongings easily throughout the day.
  • Sun Portection: Make sure you take sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun at high altitudes.
  • Emergency money: Be sure to carry extra cash for any unexpected expenses during your trip. It’s recommended to bring around 300 soles (about 90 dollars).
  • Personal Medication: Don’t forget to bring your own medicine and a basic first aid kit for the trip.
  • Hats and sunglasses: The sun is intense at high altitude and you should protect your eyes from the glare. Wear one that offers UV protection and is comfortable.
  • Rain gear: The trails can get wet during the Tour, especially during the rainy season. Make sure to bring quality waterproof gear and clothing made with materials like Gore-Tex to keep you dry while staying comfortable as you hike.
  • Warm clothing: Since temperatures can vary a lot between day and night, it’s essential to bring proper gear like fleeces, long-sleeve shirts, down jackets, and a waterproof outer layer to stay comfortable throughout the tour.
  • Sunscreen: Bring a high-SPF sunscreen and apply it before the hike. Reapply throughout the day, especially if you're sweating, to protect your skin from the strong high-altitude sun.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you to disinfect your hands before eating, drinking, or after using the bathroom. It’s an essential item for maintaining hygiene during your trip.
  • Snacks: Bring high-energy, easily digestible snacks for the journey. Avoid heavy options such as chocolate bars or biscuits, as these can make you feel sluggish. Instead, choose granola bars or a mix of nuts, which provide sustained energy without upsetting your stomach.
  • Extra Money: Please make sure you bring enough extra cash, ideally in Peruvian soles, to cover expenses such as drinks, tips, and souvenirs. You may also encounter facilities or restrooms along the route that require a small fee for use.
Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Machu Picchu - Cusco.

The journey begins with a comfortable transfer from your Cusco hotel to Ollantaytambo, where you will enjoy a scenic drive through the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas. From there, you will board a train that winds through breathtaking Andean landscapes on its way to the charming town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, our friendly team will greet you at the train station and accompany you on a short bus ride to Machu Picchu’s entrance. There, your professional guide will welcome you and lead you on an unforgettable guided tour of Machu Picchu, lasting about two hours.
