In the evening, you will relax with hot tea, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest in your campsite, preparing for the challenging and unforgettable days ahead of your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.
You will wake up early and enjoy coca tea and breakfast, preparing for the most challenging day of the trek. You will hike towards the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m / 15,092 ft), the highest point of the journey. From here, you will experience unforgettable panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and vast Andean valleys.
After spending time at the pass, you will descend for approximately 2 hours to Wayracmachay (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), where you may spot vizcachas, the native Andean rodents. You will then continue descending for around 3 hours into the lush cloud forest, arriving at Colpapampa (2,899 m / 9,514 ft). As you descend, the landscape changes dramatically, with warmer temperatures, greener scenery, and abundant tropical flora.
You will end the day staying in Andean Domes, offering comfortable accommodations surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the cloud forest.
You will start the morning slowly, enjoying the views of the cloud forest and surrounding mountains. After breakfast, you will continue trekking along narrow trails following the river, crossing wooden bridges, waterfalls, and lush plantations of banana, granadilla, and coffee.
You will arrive at Lucmabamba (2,000 m / 6,561 ft) for lunch. Here, you can enjoy a coffee tour to learn about local cultivation or relax in your private jungle dome.
As an optional activity, you may visit the Cocalmayo hot springs in Santa Teresa (not included). You will return to camp around 6:00 p.m. for tea and dinner, where you will rest and recharge for the next stage of your journey.
You will wake up to the sounds of rivers, waterfalls, and tropical birds. You will trek along part of the original Inca Trail, surrounded by orchids, coffee, banana, and avocado plantations.
You will visit the archaeological site of Llactapata, where your guide will share stories about the ancient Inca civilization. From here, you will enjoy your first breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains.
You will then descend to Hidroeléctrica for lunch. Afterward, you will hike approximately 3 hours to Aguas Calientes or take the train ($38 USD). Upon arrival, you will check in at your hostel, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, and rest for the night.
Tip: If you have not pre-booked your Machu Picchu tickets, you can purchase them locally in Aguas Calientes.
You will start your day early with breakfast in Aguas Calientes before heading to the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary, the highlight of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days and one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world.
You will have two options to reach the entrance: a 1.5-hour hike through scenic mountain trails or a bus ride (approximately $12), both offering incredible views of the cloud forest and Andean landscape. Upon arrival, you will meet your professional guide and begin your guided tour of Machu Picchu, exploring its most important areas such as temples, terraces, ceremonial plazas, and ancient water fountains while learning about the history, culture, and advanced engineering of the Inca civilization.
For those seeking extra adventure, optional hikes to Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain offer breathtaking panoramic views over the citadel and surrounding Andes, creating unforgettable photo opportunities.
After your visit, you will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and then begin your journey back to Cusco, either by train through the Sacred Valley or via Hidroeléctrica route with bus transfer.
