Itinerary

Day 01.- Cusco – Paucartambo – Pilcopata Lodge

The journey to the Amazon begins with pickup in the city of Cusco by private transport. Then, you will cross the Andes and beautiful valleys en route to Manu National Park, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.

On the way, you will visit Ninamarca, a pre-Inca archaeological site with funerary towers, and the colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its rich Andean culture and traditions.

You will then ascend to Acjanaco Pass (3,500 m / 11,482 ft), the gateway to the Manu rainforest. From here, you enter the cloud forest, a unique ecosystem rich in flora and fauna, where you may observe the Andean cock-of-the-rock and, with luck, the spectacled bear in its natural habitat.

The day ends in Pilcopata, where you will stay in a comfortable jungle lodge surrounded by nature and the sounds of the rainforest, marking the beginning of your Amazon adventure.

Day 02.- Pilcopata Inn – Amazon Manu Lodge

You will wake up early and visit a viewing platform to observe the famous dance of the Andean cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird.

After breakfast, you will take a guided forest walk to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, including monkeys and a variety of bird species.

You will then visit coca plantations and a wildlife rescue center to learn about local farming practices and animal conservation. Afterwards, you will travel to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 meters above sea level.

From there, you will begin a boat journey along the river, observing birds such as herons, vultures, and cormorants while enjoying the Amazon scenery. You will arrive at Amazon Manu Lodge and enjoy lunch by the river.

In the afternoon, you will visit a swamp area where you can observe birds such as toucans, woodpeckers, and macaws. Later, you will go caiman watching, which is especially active at night. Finally, you will return to the lodge to rest, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.

Day 03 .-Amazon Manu Lodge – Machuwasi

Very early in the morning, you will board a small boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a natural riverbank where different species of parrots gather each morning, including blue-headed parrots, white-eyed parakeets, and chestnut-fronted macaws.

Here, you will observe the birds feeding on mineral-rich clay, which helps them digest food and eliminate toxins. After this experience, you will return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast.

After breakfast, you will take a 2 to 3-hour guided jungle walk through lush rainforest trails, surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Amazon. Later, you will return to the lodge for lunch and have time to rest or swim in the river.

After lunch, you will take a short boat ride and hike through vibrant jungle trails to reach Lake Machuwasi. Using a spotting scope, you will enjoy birdwatching and may observe species such as egrets, toucanets, and many others.

In the afternoon, you will enjoy an exciting canopy or zipline activity, gliding between platforms high in the trees with full safety equipment. After crossing the Amazon canopy, you will rappel approximately 20 meters down to the forest floor.

At night, you will explore the jungle’s nocturnal life, observing frogs, insects, and other species active after dark.

Day 04.-Puerto Atalaya – Cusco

After breakfast, you will enjoy observing hummingbirds around the lodge before taking a boat back to Puerto Atalaya.

From there, you will board a vehicle and begin your return journey to Cusco, once again crossing the beautiful Andean landscapes. Along the way, you will stop for lunch before continuing through valleys and mountains.

You will arrive in Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., taking with you unforgettable memories of nature, culture, and your Amazon experience in Manu National Park.

Solo Traveller

Our four-day adventure through the Manu Biosphere Reserve was an extraordinary experience! On Day 1, we departed from Cusco and visited the ancient Chullpas of Ninamarca, followed by a tour of the charming colonial town of Paucartambo. The journey to San Pedro Lodge through the lush cloud forest, home to the stunning Cock of the Rock and Spectacled Bear, was breathtaking. The tranquil surroundings of the Orquídeas de San Pedro Lodge made for a perfect overnight stay.

Day 2 started with witnessing the mesmerizing mating dance of the Cock of the Rock. We then traveled to Pilcopata and took a scenic boat ride to Erika Lodge, where we explored the rich biodiversity through guided hikes. Day 3 included a visit to Machuwasi Lake for birdwatching and a thrilling nocturnal wildlife exploration. On the final day, an early morning boat ride to a nearby clay lick provided an unforgettable wildlife spectacle, with vibrant parrots indulging in the mineral-rich clay. Returning to Cusco in the late evening, we reflected on the incredible beauty and diversity of the Amazon. This journey left us with cherished memories of the vibrant ecosystems and the serene lodges we stayed at.
