Along the route, you will visit Ninamarca, a pre-Inca archaeological site with ancient burial towers, and Paucartambo, a traditional colonial town known for its Andean culture and history.

You will continue into the Andean cloud forest, a unique biodiversity hotspot in the Peruvian Amazon, home to rich flora and fauna. Here, you may observe the Andean cock-of-the-rock and, with luck, the spectacled bear in its natural habitat.

You will arrive in Pilcopata, where you will stay at a comfortable jungle lodge surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon rainforest, marking the beginning of your Amazon adventure in Peru.

Day 2Pilcopata – Aguas Calientes – Boca Manu (300 m.a.s.l.)

You will start early in the morning with breakfast before beginning a guided Amazon rainforest hike, where you will have the opportunity to observe diverse wildlife in Peru, including monkeys and exotic tropical bird species in their natural habitat.

You will then visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center, learning about local Amazon agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection efforts in the Peruvian Amazon.

Afterwards, you will continue by vehicle to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at approximately 500 meters above sea level, a key access point to Manu National Park. From here, you will begin a scenic boat journey through the Amazon River, surrounded by dense rainforest and incredible biodiversity.

During the river expedition, you may observe Amazon wildlife such as herons, vultures, and cormorants along the riverbanks. You will also stop to relax in natural hot springs, enjoying the unique rainforest environment.

After lunch, you will continue your Amazon river tour until you arrive in Boca Manu, where you will stay overnight in a comfortable jungle lodge, deep in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

Day 3Boca Manu – Reserved Zone / Casa Machiguenga (395 m.a.s.l.)

You will depart early in the morning to visit a nearby parrot clay lick, located just ten minutes downriver from the lodge, where you may observe vibrant macaws and other Amazon parrot species in their natural habitat.

You will then make a short stop at the Limonal control checkpoint before continuing deeper into the Manu Reserved Zone, one of the most pristine and biodiverse areas of the Peruvian Amazon. The journey continues for approximately four hours into the heart of Manu National Park.

Along the way, you will have the chance to observe incredible Amazon wildlife, including macaws, vultures, eagles, toucans, herons, capybaras, caimans, river turtles, and several species of monkeys. With luck, you may even spot a jaguar along the riverbanks or moving through the rainforest.

You will arrive at Casa Machiguenga (Casa Matsiguenka), an authentic jungle lodge in the Amazon rainforest, where you will spend the next two nights. In the afternoon, you will take a guided rainforest walk to explore the untouched ecosystem and search for wildlife in its natural habitat.

You will spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, staying in basic shared facilities, offering a true and authentic Amazon experience in Manu National Park.

In the evening, you will also have the option to join a night walk, where you may observe frogs, snakes, insects, and other nocturnal species in their natural habitat.

You will likely wake up to the powerful calls of howler monkeys echoing through the Amazon rainforest. Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will begin a guided Amazon jungle hike, taking advantage of the cooler hours when wildlife in Manu National Park is most active and easier to observe.

You will explore the impressive Lake Salvador, a key wildlife hotspot in the Manu Reserved Zone, where you will search for giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), an endangered species found in this protected Amazon ecosystem. You may also encounter black caimans, multiple species of monkeys (up to 13 recorded in Manu National Park), the prehistoric hoatzin bird, kingfishers, and many other Amazon rainforest species.

You will return to the jungle lodge for lunch, and in the afternoon, you will continue with a 3-hour guided rainforest hike to further explore the incredible biodiversity of the Manu Reserved Zone, one of the most pristine areas of the Peruvian Amazon.

I recently had the most incredible journey through the Manu Biosphere Reserve, starting from Cusco and heading towards Pillcopata. The early morning departure allowed us to explore the ancient “Chullpas” tombs of Ninamarca, followed by a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo. Ascending to the Acjanacu pass and entering the Cultural Zone, we marveled at the diverse cloud forest, home to the vibrant Cock of the Rock and the elusive Spectacled Bear. The overnight stay at Orquídeas de San Pedro Lodge was enchanting, surrounded by lush orchids and ancient tree ferns.

The adventure continued with early wildlife watching, including the Cock of the Rock’s mating display, and an exciting boat ride to Erika Lodge in a private reserve. We explored intricate jungle trails and enjoyed the serenade of the jungle at night. The journey down the Alto Madre de Dios River to Blanquillo was filled with bird sightings and a magical nocturnal walk. The highlight was observing parrots and macaws at the Parrot Lick, a natural spectacle. The expedition provided profound insights and a deep appreciation for the Amazon’s vibrant ecosystems. This journey is unforgettable!
