Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa

You will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. and enjoy a scenic drive through the Andean mountains to Mollepata, where you will make a short stop for breakfast (not included). You will then continue for approximately one hour to Challacancha (3,380 m / 11,089 ft), the official starting point of your Salkantay Trek.

Upon arrival, you will begin a 2-hour moderate hike to Soraypampa (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), walking through stunning mountain landscapes with views of glaciers, valleys, and the majestic Andes. Once there, you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch and settle into your first campsite.

In the afternoon, you will hike for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,779 ft), one of the most breathtaking highlights of the trek. You will have time to take photos, admire the turquoise waters, and enjoy the incredible glacier scenery before returning to Soraypampa.

In the evening, you will relax with hot tea, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest in your campsite, preparing for the challenging and unforgettable days ahead of your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

Day 2Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay or Colpa pampa.

You will wake up early and enjoy coca tea and breakfast, preparing for the most challenging day of the trek. You will hike towards the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m / 15,092 ft), the highest point of the journey. From here, you will experience unforgettable panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and vast Andean valleys.

After spending time at the pass, you will descend for approximately 2 hours to Wayracmachay (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), where you may spot vizcachas, the native Andean rodents. You will then continue descending for around 3 hours into the lush cloud forest, arriving at Colpapampa (2,899 m / 9,514 ft). As you descend, the landscape changes dramatically, with warmer temperatures, greener scenery, and abundant tropical flora.

You will end the day staying in Andean Domes, offering comfortable accommodations surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the cloud forest.

Day 3Colpapampa – Lucmabamba via Sayhuayaco & Santa Teresa

You will start the morning slowly, enjoying the views of the cloud forest and surrounding mountains. After breakfast, you will continue trekking along narrow trails following the river, crossing wooden bridges, waterfalls, and lush plantations of banana, granadilla, and coffee.

You will arrive at Lucmabamba (2,000 m / 6,561 ft) for lunch. Here, you can enjoy a coffee tour to learn about local cultivation or relax in your private jungle dome.

As an optional activity, you may visit the Cocalmayo hot springs in Santa Teresa (not included). You will return to camp around 6:00 p.m. for tea and dinner, where you will rest and recharge for the next stage of your journey.

Day 4Lucmabamba – Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

You will wake up to the sounds of rivers, waterfalls, and tropical birds. You will trek along part of the original Inca Trail, surrounded by orchids, coffee, banana, and avocado plantations.

You will visit the archaeological site of Llactapata, where your guide will share stories about the ancient Inca civilization. From here, you will enjoy your first breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains.

You will then descend to Hidroeléctrica for lunch. Afterward, you will hike approximately 3 hours to Aguas Calientes or take the train ($38 USD). Upon arrival, you will check in at your hostel, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, and rest for the night.

Tip: If you have not pre-booked your Machu Picchu tickets, you can purchase them locally in Aguas Calientes.

You will start your day early with breakfast in Aguas Calientes before heading to the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary, the highlight of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days and one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world.

You will have two options to reach the entrance: a 1.5-hour hike through scenic mountain trails or a bus ride (approximately $12), both offering incredible views of the cloud forest and Andean landscape. Upon arrival, you will meet your professional guide and begin your guided tour of Machu Picchu, exploring its most important areas such as temples, terraces, ceremonial plazas, and ancient water fountains while learning about the history, culture, and advanced engineering of the Inca civilization.

For those seeking extra adventure, optional hikes to Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain offer breathtaking panoramic views over the citadel and surrounding Andes, creating unforgettable photo opportunities.

  • A copy of each traveler’s passport (sent via WhatsApp or email)
  • A valid reservation deposit to secure your space and Machu Picchu entrance ticket

Payment & Deposit:

  • A 50% non-refundable deposit per person is required to confirm your reservation. You may also choose to pay 100% upfront. A 6% transaction fee applies (PayPal or credit card available).

F.A.Q. ¿What should I pack in my backpack?

If you are planning to hike the Salkantay Trek 5 Days, it is important to prepare your backpack and duffel bag in advance for a comfortable experience.

We recommend bringing one lightweight daypack for daily essentials such as water, snacks, jacket, camera, and personal items. Your main luggage will be transported separately by our team.

For the trek, carry only the essentials. Any extra luggage can be safely stored at your hotel in Cusco or in our secure storage facility before starting the Salkantay Trek.

What should I carry in my daypack?

During the Salkantay Trek 5 Days, you will carry your personal daypack with essential items. Due to local regulations, your backpack must not exceed 25 liters, and large bags are not allowed inside Machu Picchu. Please ensure your backpack is lightweight, compact, and comfortable.

Sun Protection: Bring a hat and UV-protection sunglasses. At high altitude, the sun is intense and protection is essential.

Rain Gear: Weather in the Andes can change quickly. Carry waterproof clothing (Gore-Tex or similar) to stay dry during the trek.

Warm Clothing: Temperatures vary greatly between day and night. Pack fleece, long-sleeve shirts, a down jacket, and a waterproof outer layer.

Sunscreen & Hygiene: Use high-SPF sunscreen and reapply during the day. Carry hand sanitizer for hygiene before meals and after bathroom use.

Headlamp: A headlamp is essential for early mornings and nighttime at campsites. It allows hands-free movement in low light conditions.

What is included in the duffel bag service?

We provide a duffel bag for your Salkantay Trek 5 Days, where you can store items not needed during the day. Our muleteers transport it between campsites using horses and mules.

The maximum weight allowed is 5 kg (including sleeping bag). The duffel bag is delivered to your hotel or office one day before departure.

Sleeping Bag: Sleeping bags are not included but can be rented or purchased from us. We recommend a -10°C sleeping bag (approx. 2 kg). Please pack it in a waterproof plastic bag to protect it during the trek.

Rain Gear: Weather in the Andes can change quickly. Bring waterproof clothing (Gore-Tex or similar) to stay dry during rain or snow.

Warm Jacket & Layers: Temperatures vary greatly. Bring layered clothing including a warm jacket and waterproof outer layer for cold nights and high-altitude sections.
