The best time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from May to November. This period offers clear skies and more stable weather conditions, ideal for trekking and sightseeing. However, it is also the peak tourist season, so be prepared for larger crowds.
Cusco sits at an elevation of 3,400 meters (11,200 feet), so it’s essential to acclimate properly. Spend the first couple of days in Cusco taking it easy, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities. Drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy, can also help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. If you experience severe symptoms, seek medical attention.
The most popular way to travel from Cusco to Machu Picchu is by train. Several train services offer scenic journeys from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. From Aguas Calientes, a shuttle bus or a hike will take you up to the ancient citadel. For those seeking adventure, the multi-day Inca Trail trek is another iconic route.
The Sacred Valley of the Incas is home to numerous archaeological sites, traditional villages, and stunning landscapes. Key attractions include the Pisac ruins and market, and Ollantaytambo fortress and town. The valley offers a mix of cultural heritage and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in Peru.
Tickets for Machu Picchu can be purchased online through the official Machu Picchu website or from authorized ticket offices in Cusco and Aguas Calientes. It’s highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, especially during the peak tourist season (June to August), as daily visitor numbers are limited. When booking, you can choose from different ticket options. Make sure to bring your printed ticket and an official ID (such as a passport) on the day of your visit.
My journey through Cusco and the Sacred Valley was truly unforgettable. From the moment of arrival at Cusco Airport, where I was warmly welcomed and transferred to my hotel, to the final farewell on departure day, every detail was expertly arranged. The city tour of Cusco was a captivating introduction to the region’s rich history and cultural heritage, with visits to iconic landmarks like the Koricancha and Sacsayhuaman Fortress. The exploration of the Sacred Valley was equally memorable, with visits to the bustling market in Pisac and the ancient ruins of Ollantaytambo.
However, the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly Machu Picchu, where the awe-inspiring beauty of the citadel left me speechless. The guided tour provided fascinating insights into the site’s history and significance, while the free time allowed for personal exploration and reflection. Overall, this tour exceeded my expectations in every way, offering a perfect balance of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone seeking an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Inca Empire.
