The Salkañan Route
Embark on an exciting adventure through the majestic Vilcabamba mountains. This tour is perfect for nature and adventure lovers, offering you the chance to explore the stunning natural and cultural beauty surrounding the city of Cusco.
Pick-up from your hotel: It’s still dark in Cusco, but you’re ready. Between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m., A transport will pick you up. You hop in, get comfortable, and prepare to begin this new adventure in the Andes.
Journey to Limatambo: You travel for about two hours while the sky slowly begins to brighten. Gradually, the Andean landscapes appear through the window. You take a deep breath and feel that it’s going to be a great day.
Breakfast in Limatambo: You arrive in the peaceful village of Limatambo. A warm, traditional breakfast is waiting for you which is perfect for recharging before continuing the journey. A cup of coca tea is a must, helping you adjust to the altitude.
Take a drive to Sorochoca and stop at the viewpoint of the Qoyllor Lagoon: The drive continues to Sorochoca. Along the way, you make a special stop: the Qoyllor Lagoon viewpoint, located at 4,200 meters above sea level. You step out to stretch your legs, take photos, and begin acclimatizing. The scenery leaves you speechless.
Arrival at Waywa Kunka terminal: You reach the starting point of the hike. From Waywa Kunka, you can see the majestic Apu Humantay. Your guide gives you all the necessary information: the weather, the trail conditions, how to walk at high altitude. After a quick warm-up, you’re ready to go.
Hike to InKaChiriasqa Lagoon: You begin the trek. The air is crisp but thin you’re ascending to 4,600 meters. The path is gentle but requires patience and a steady pace. After about 90 minutes, you’ll reach your destination.
Arrival at InKaChiriasqa Lagoon: You made it! In front of you, the stunning Inca Chiriaska Lagoon glistens among the mountains. You’re over 4,600 meters above sea level, surrounded by peace, glaciers, and raw nature. You have free time to explore, admire the Apu Salkantay and nearby lagoons, and take the best photos of your journey.
Return to Waywa Kunka: After this magical moment at the summit, you begin the descent. You walk calmly, enjoying the scenery from a new perspective, reliving the beauty of the experience.
Lunch in Limatambo: You arrive back in Limatambo, where a comforting hot lunch awaits. The warm meal restores your energy, and your body is thankful.
Return to Cusco: You board the transport back to Cusco. You settle in, maybe take a nap, or quietly watch the passing landscapes, knowing this day will stay in your memory.
Arrival at your accommodation in Cusco: You return to Cusco just as the sun begins to set. You’re tired, but happy. Today, you discovered a hidden natural gem of the Andes that few have had the chance to explore.
It is recommended to bring comfortable and suitable clothing for walking, including a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes, a hat or cap, sunscreen, and water to stay hydrated during the hike.
