FAQs

1.How do I prepare for the trek in the Colca Canyon?

Preparation for the trek should include regular exercise leading up to the tour, focusing on cardio and leg strength to handle the hiking. It’s also essential to acclimate to the altitude if possible. Pack light but ensure you have all necessary gear, such as sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, and sufficient water and snacks. Hiring a walking stick can also be helpful for the steep trails.

2.What should I pack for the Colca Canyon Tour?

It is recommended to pack comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothing (especially for the mornings and evenings), a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a refillable water bottle, snacks, a camera, and personal items like toiletries. Layers are important due to varying temperatures during the day.

3.How physically demanding is the tour?

The 4-day Colca Canyon Tour involves moderate to challenging hikes, especially during the descent into and ascent out of the canyon. Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with walking on uneven terrain. There are opportunities to adjust the level of activity based on your fitness level.

4.What is the best time of year to take the Colca Canyon Tour?

The best time to visit Colca Canyon is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This period offers the most pleasant weather for hiking and clear skies for viewing the condors and the canyon’s landscapes. The rainy season, from November to April, can make hiking more challenging due to muddy trails.

5.Can I see condors during the tour, and when is the best time to see them?

Yes, one of the highlights of the Colca Canyon Tour is seeing the Andean condors. The best time to see them is early in the morning, particularly at the Cruz del Condor viewpoint, where these majestic birds can often be seen soaring on thermal currents. Sightings are more common during the dry season when the weather conditions are favorable.
