Arrival and Amazon Rainforest Exploration at Monte Amazonico Lodge.
When you arrive at the airport or bus station, you’ll be greeted and transferred to the Monte Amazonico Lodge office for important information about your tour. From there, you’ll take a scenic one-hour boat ride to the lodge, where you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing regional fruit juice.
After settling into your room, you’ll join an expert local guide for a two-hour hike through the dense tropical forest. Along the way, you’ll see majestic trees—some over 500 years old—and have the chance to spot wildlife like toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This hike lets you experience the magic of the Amazon Rainforest inside the Tambopata National Reserve, a protected area spanning 278,000 hectares.
After lunch, you’ll visit Monkey Island, located just across the Madre de Dios River from the lodge. Here, you can observe different species of monkeys such as brown capuchins, squirrel monkeys, saddle-back tamarins, and white capuchins.
As night falls, you’ll go on a guided caiman search along the riverbanks. With some luck, you might even see a capybara—the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilos.
Afterwards, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a good night’s rest, ready for more adventures to come.
Lake Sandoval Adventure and Return to the City
After an early breakfast, you’ll take a short boat ride to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. Once you check in at the control point, you’ll begin a 3-kilometer (approximately 2-mile) walk through the rainforest to reach the lake—one of the largest and most beautiful in the Tambopata National Reserve, and home to wild piranhas.
Upon arrival, your guide will prepare a rowing boat, and you’ll begin a peaceful navigation across the lake, surrounded by stunning natural scenery. Keep your eyes open—you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of bird and monkey species, including hoatzins, cormorants, herons, eagles, and monkeys such as howlers, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and even sloths.
With a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of the elusive giant river otters, which can grow up to two meters long and are critically endangered. You could also spot one of the largest recorded black caimans, measuring over four meters long.
After this unforgettable experience, you’ll head back to the lodge for a typical Amazonian lunch. Then, it’s time to begin your journey back to the city, carrying unforgettable memories of your adventure in the Amazon.
