We’ll pick you up from the airport, bus station, or your hotel and transfer you to our office for registration. If you have large luggage. We recommend repacking and bringing only the essentials. Traveling light will make your jungle experience much more comfortable.
Then, you’ll travel by 4×4 vehicle for two hours to the banks of the Tambopata River. There, you will board a boat and cruise into the heart of the rainforest until you reach the Tambopata Amazon Lodge.
Upon arrival, you’ll receive a warm welcome and check into your room. after a delicious lunch will be waiting for you.
In the afternoon, we’ll go on an introductory hike through the tropical rainforest. This will give you the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and fascinating insects.
At 4:30 a.m., ready to embark on a unique journey: one hour and a half boat ride to Collpa Chuncho, home to the world’s largest macaw clay lick.
As you cruise along the river in the early morning light, keep your eyes open. You might spot amazing wildlife, such as capybaras the world’s largest rodents or even tapirs. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the elusive and majestic Jaguar, South America’s most stunning feline.
Breakfast will be served camp style, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle.
Once you arrive, settle into your seat on the riverbank and prepare to be amazed by one of nature’s most breathtaking shows. Hundreds of parrots of different species will soar through the sky and land to feed on mineral rich clay. This clay is an essential part of their diet and helps them detoxify from the natural compounds in their food.
At the least expected moment, the stars of the show arrive. Red, green, blue, and yellow macaws. These brilliantly colored birds fill the air with vibrant energy as they feed and fly above you. Few people have the opportunity to watch them in their natural habitat, and you’ll be one of the lucky ones.
In the afternoon, you’ll continue a one-hour boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado, Then, you’ll take another hour long boat ride to your next destination: Tambopata Lodge on Sandoval Lake. Once you arrive, you will check into your room and take in the peaceful surroundings.
As night falls, it’s time for another thrilling adventure: a nighttime search for white caimans. These caimans are usually found resting along the sandbanks of the Madre de Dios River. Don’t forget your flashlight! This part of the journey is full of mystery and excitement.
You may also encounter capybaras, which can weigh up to 130 pounds! After your nighttime stroll, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a well deserved rest.
After breakfast, you’ll hike three kilometers through the lush rainforest to Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve.
Once you arrive, you’ll board a rowboat and glide across the calm waters, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle.
Keep your eyes peeled for an incredible variety of birds and monkeys in their natural habitat, You may see shanshos, cormorants, jacanas, tiger herons, vultures, and playful primates, such as cotomonos, monk sakis, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths resting in the treetops.
If you’re lucky, you might also see the elusive and endangered giant otter, which grows up to two meters long, or the awe inspiring black caiman, which can measure over four meters long the largest in the Amazon basin.
After this unforgettable wildlife experience, you’ll return to the lodge for a traditional Amazon lunch.
Later in the afternoon, you’ll begin your return to the city. You will be transferred to the airport/bus station or center of Puerto Maldonado.
Tambopata is a region in southeastern Peru, known for its incredible biodiversity and pristine rainforest. It is located in the Madre de Dios department, near the borders of Bolivia and Brazil, and is home to the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
The best time to visit Tambopata is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. During this period, the weather is more predictable, and there are fewer mosquitoes. However, the rainforest is accessible year-round, and the wet season (November to April) offers a lush, green landscape and the chance to see more wildlife.
Tambopata is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife, including macaws, jaguars, caimans, giant river otters, and hundreds of species of birds and butterflies. Visitors might also encounter various monkey species, capybaras, and tapirs, making it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
To reach Tambopata, most visitors fly to Puerto Maldonado, the nearest major city, from Lima or Cusco. From Puerto Maldonado, it’s a short drive to the Tambopata River, where you can take a boat ride to reach the lodges and campsites located within the reserve.
